Cold Artist

What is an illusion? What is a reality? What is a reflection of a reality? What is deception? Brought up on the old Arctic legends and fairy-tales in which a seal customarily turned into a woman, and a woman married a caribou or an arctic fox, I use all kinds of free multi-layer and stretchy materials, from blubber to sea ice to their reflections in the hunters’ mirrors, but most of the time I use my own body as my main communication means.

Avannaa,  an eyewitness cultural expedition to the world’s most isolated communities affected by climate and societal change. It offers a unique view of the people and their natural habitats in the hardest-to-reach places that otherwise stay invisible to the eyes of decision makers and general audiences worldwide.

Arctic Arts is a community of artists living and working in the the Arctic, from Yakutia to Chukotka, from Nunavut to Northern Greenland.

"Under the stage name ColdArtist, I explore the limits of the body and the possibilities of the mind in the harsh environment of the Arctic."

“What happens to us when we are suddenly deprived of our temperature controlled environments? What if everything that we take for granted – clothes, running water, air conditioning systems, supermarkets, buses, roads and even the road signs – are suddenly gone? Can we survive outside of the cocoon? Here, on the drifting sea ice we don’t struggle against the elements. Instead, we are working with them, making the best out of forces of Nature. We wander, accept, and adapt…”

Support

Thank you to all those who continue to support my work and occasionally are crazy enough to jump into a frozen river to see if the whole thing is real!
